The Institute

Project 440 Institute is the only summer institution of its kind. Teachers, students, and professional musicians from all around the world will train for three weeks in Savannah, GA, engaging the Savannah region in an authentic way. A sampling of the classes provided includes classroom management, program development and creation (script writing, residency planning, etc.), and public speaking. The inaugural P440 Institute will take place in late spring / early summer of 2011. Our goal is to have this program morph into a year round Fellowship Program. Details to come.

P440 Fellowship Program is a free internship for students studying music or music education at a collegiate or post-graduate level. Students must apply to the program as a member of an existing string quartet or quintet. The fellowship program, lasting three weeks combines active hands on classroom sessions with performances in schools and community venues. Students will take courses designed to help them build their community engagement skills. Classes include, but are not limited to:
Basic string pedagogy
Chamber Music
Script writing for Community Programs
Public Speaking
Master Classes with Guest Artists
Classroom Management 101
Musical and verbal improvisation
Community Partnerships 101
Participation in service projects around Savannah
Students should come prepared to work hard, but they will have a lot of fun in the process. Students will gain an intimate knowledge of the historical city of Savannah, and learn more about integrating music programs in a myriad of different ways. Details on the application process, tuition and financial aid will be in the late fall of 2010. While our goal is to incorporate all instruments, the First Institute will be open to String Players only.
Professional Musicians’ WorkshopIn an effort to promote and discuss methods current orchestra musicians can engage their communities, the Orchestra Musicians’ Workshop will be a training opportunity for musicians who currently play in professional orchestras to touch up on and learn some of the most innovative techniques of community engagement – with the beautiful setting of Savannah, GA as their classroom.
OMW participants will take part in classes and seminars held by P440 special guests and guests lecturers.
OMW participants will be active in both the MusicAlive and Underground aspect of the P440 Institute.
OMW participants will act as mentors to the Fellows of the P440 Institute.
OMW participants will be able to meet and discuss successful and unsuccessful attempts of community engagement from their home orchestras
OMW participants will work closely with Educators
Music Educators
Music educators will work with P440 Staff to craft realistic and effective curriculum for all P440 Institute participants. Focused on building a blueprint for successful residencies, classroom music educators will work extensively with P440 Fellows and attendees of the PMW to create unique and one-of-a-kind learning opportunities for students of all ages.
